Recyclables placed outside the blue bin go to the city's landfill |
If there is one thing I've learned since Shreveport initiated it's curbside recycling program - it's that recycling drives folks nuts.
I'm talking bonkers. Schizo. Mad as a hatter. I mean that in the most respectful terms.
To clarify, it's really not recycling but actually the lack thereof or associated problems that sends them over the edge and penning a letter to me.
Bob Feather complains about "erratic" pick-up. Seems recycling crews working his neighborhood pick and choose when and if they'll come get the goods. Staci Zeagler writes about tons of recyclable materials routinely thrown into the garbage by local schools because the city's program doesn't include them or other "commercial" customers. And, C. Rodgers is upset because recycling crews leave behind recyclables not placed in the program's nifty blue bins. Those materials instead go into the city's landfill because recycling crews won't take anything that's not in the bin.
This isn't the first time I've heard from Rodgers about this issue. A previous letter pointed out the same problem and asked why can't the crews just pick up the items and throw them in the truck. Seems reasonable enough but Pratt Industries, the company that runs the city's recycling program, is sticking to its guns on this issue. The company advises Rodgers and other environmentally conscientious citizens to get another blue bin.
That suggestion doesn't still well with Rodgers and others, who may only have extra recyclables occasionally - thus making an extra bin an unnecessary expense.
Recyclables placed in the bin go to the recycling center. |
But Rodgers is a practical person and as such recently offered photos as examples of "what not to do" and "what to do."
Seems easy enough to do the right thing. C. Rodgers and others will thank you.
